Open to all Harvard Undergraduates living and/or working in Washington DC, the Summer in Washington program is a great way to learn about public service careers, interact with Harvard alumni, explore Washington, DC and meet over 250 of your fellow Harvard undergraduates. Rising freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors, and the Class of 2014 are all welcome to participate.

INFORMATION ABOUT THE SIW COORDINATOR POSITION:

The Summer-in-Washington (SIW) Program provides Harvard undergraduates in the Washington, DC-area with logistical services and intellectual, social, and athletic activities during the summer and is one of the most comprehensive SIW Programs in the country.  The SIW Program Coordinator is employed by the Institute of Politics to execute this unique program in conjunction with the IOP Director of Internships and Career Services, Amy Howell, and Maralee Schwartz, former IOP fellow and former National Political Editor of the Washington Post.  Among the responsibilities of the Coordinator are:

Spring Semester/Before Leaving Campus

  • create and maintain an online housing and roommate directory for Harvard students heading to DC
  • publicize the Summer-in-Washington program here at Harvard and identify students who are planning to spend the summer in Washington
  • establish a mailing, phone and e-mail list of Harvard students who will be in Washington for the summer and who are interested in participating in Summer-in-Washington activities
  • start to invite guest speakers and organize events for the calendar
  • create a Facebook account and Google calendar

Once You Get to Washington

  • organize social activities in Washington for Harvard interns
  • organize a political speakers’ series
  • coordinate social and athletic activities with the Summer-in-Washington coordinators from other colleges and universities
  • maintain a database and distribute a directory of DC-area Harvard students
  • write and distribute weekly e-newsletters and calendar to participants with information about the upcoming programs and reflections on the past week’s activities
  • organize a community service project for Harvard students in Washington
  • organize a Kick Off event and Mid Summer event
  • maintain contact with the staff of the Institute of Politics with regard to Summer-in-Washington activities
