Eat pizza and meet Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, IN! Mayor Buttigieg is the youngest mayor of an American city with more than 100,000 residents. In his first mayoral term, he served in the US Navy Reserves for seven months in Afghanistan, prompting The Washington Post to call him “the most interesting mayor you’ve never heard of.” In June, he came out in the South Bend Tribune, writing, “Being gay has had no bearing on my job performance in business, in the military, or… as mayor.” Mayor Buttigieg graduated from Harvard in 2004, where he was president of the IOP’s Student Advisory Committee.
