The New Vote: The Trends Reshaping America's Political Future with Kristen Soltis Anderson

Description

Week Two (Oct 1): Demographic Change and Electoral Politics
In 2008, much attention was paid to how the Obama campaign “re-made” the electorate to favor Democrats, working hard to register new voters and to activate voters who are young or from minority communities. But the change wasn’t just a one-time phenomenon; the Census data show that America is changing dramatically, particularly in the “Sun Belt” states. For instance, today, a majority of those born in states like New Mexico are not white. How has the changing racial and ethnic makeup of America altered the playing field for elections? What are the cultural values and preferences of America’s growing Latino community and how will they influence politics in the future?
