The Summer Stipend Program

Tracy Han

Tracy Han intern at Un Buen Comienzo ("A Good Start"), a Harvard collaborative project in Santiago, Chile.

The Institute of Politics is proud to offer stipend funding for rising sophomores, juniors and seniors accepting no- or low-paying summer jobs in local, state or federal government, public interest groups, non-governmental organizations, political organizations, campaigns, and non-profit groups. This includes international internships as well.

Students are responsible for obtaining their own internships or employment, and the job should be full-time and last a minimum of eight weeks. Students who leave their internships earlier than expected are required to notify the Institute of Politics. Preference will be given to undergrads who have never received an IOP Stipend, but students who have received one previous stipend are eligible to apply.

Once the IOP Internships Committee has determined an internship is eligible, awards of up to $2,500 will be made based on the financial need of each student.  The Harvard Financial Aid office provides the selection committee with a general evaluation of each applicant's financial need, including summer work study status. This information is confidential. Stipend recipients must apply for summer work-study funds if there is any possibility of eligibility.

A selection committee comprised of Institute of Politics staff and members of the Institute's Internships Committee will review all submissions. The IOP Internships Program staff ensures the anonymity of all applicants during the evaluation process. At the conclusion of your internship, the IOP will require a supervisor's report as well as a brief summary of your internship by September 2009.

The deadline for Stipend Applications is April 23, 2009.
