Former Senator Alan K. Simpson presented the 2013 Theodore H. White Lecture on Press and Politics. He addressed the federal budget process and the growth in entitlement spending. Senator Simpson also discussed the barriers to budget reform he experienced after serving as co-chair of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform. Alex Jones opened and moderated the event. Jones also presented the David Nyhan Prize for Political Journalism to Leonard Pitts, Jr., columnist for the Miami Herald. The Forum was sponsored by the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics, and Public Policy.
