William F. Winter

William F. Winter was elected to the Mississippi House of Representatives from Grenada County for three terms from 1948 to 1956, during which time he also served as legislative assistant to Senator John Stennis from 1950 to 1951. He resigned his seat to accept a four-year appointment as State Tax Collector, a post he was elected to in 1960 and which he asked the legislature to abolish in 1964. Mr. Winter was then elected State Treasurer from 1964 to 1968, Lieutenant Governor from 1972 to 1976 and Governor from 1980 to 1984. Mr. Winter is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History and is co-author of History of Mississippi and Mississippi's Constitution Today.
