David Barrett is the former Premier and Minister of Finance of Canada. As a member of the New Democratic Party, Mr. Barrett was first elected to the British Columbia Legislature in September 1960 and re-elected in 1963, 1966 and 1969. After the 1969 election, Mr. Barrett was named Leader of Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition. The New Democratic Party was elected government in the 1972 election and Mr. Barrett was sworn in as Premier and Minister of Finance. In 1975, the New Democratic Party was defeated and Mr. Barrett, upon re-election in 1976, served through 1983 as Leader of the Opposition. Since that time he had pursued a career as a radio and television commentator as well as writing articles and lecturing across Canada.
