Carl Anthony is currently President of Earth Island Institute and Director of its Urban Habitat Program. Trained as an architect and town planner, Anthony began his professional career in the late 1960's at the Architect's Renewal Committee in Harlem, one of the first community design centers in the nation. On a William Kinne Fellowship, in 1970, he traveled in West Africa. Returning to the United States in 1971, he moved to California and accepted a teaching position as Assistant Professor Architecture at the University of California-Berkeley. He then became a faculty member at the College of Natural Resources at UC-Berkeley. In 1979, Anthony left the faculty to establish his own urban design and architecture practice before joining the Earth Island Institute.
