ALEX SANDERS was born, raised and educated in South Carolina. After serving in the U.S. Army, he earned his undergraduate and law degrees at the University of South Carolina. He later earned a Master's Degree in Judicial Process from the University of Virginia. He practiced law, served in the Legislature, and taught law at the University of South Carolina and the Harvard Law School. He was Chief Judge of the South Carolina Court of Appeals and President of the College of Charleston.

In 2002, Sanders was the Democratic nominee for the United States Senate. His candidacy was not successful but closely watched and highly regarded. Upon hearing that he will be coming to Harvard as a fellow the journalist and author Joe Klein said of Sanders, \He is a one-stop shopping center for information about Southern politics, issue politics, law and rhetoric. He is a dangerous man - he may lead the students to expect that politicians can be wise, honorable, spontaneous and drop-dead funny.\ Alex is married to Zoe Dutrow Sanders. They are the parents of one child, Zoe Sanders Nettles, who practices law in Columbia.
