Summer of Service: During the summer of 2013 the IOP is proud to sponsor and work with over 250 students who are spending their summers in politics and public service around the world. Learn more about this program.

Wil Shih '15 is a summer stipend recipient working with 270 Strategies in Chicago.

This summer, I'm interning at 270 Strategies in Chicago, which is a political consulting firm founded by a few of the top operatives from the Obama 2012 campaign. It's been a great experience so far. My supervisor Mark Beatty, who was Deputy Battleground States Director on the campaign, is actually a Harvard grad and former member of SAC. 270 is a very new company so I've been able to jump right in and contribute in a lot of ways, doing everything from research to putting together chairs for their new office.

Some of the most exciting news of the summer is that our firm has actually been signed by Booker for Senate to create their grassroots field organization. Hopefully this means I'll get to meet Mayor Booker at some point. Fingers crossed. I've also been able to interact with Jeremy Bird, who was the National Field Director in 2012, and who is pictured speaking to us interns below. It's been a great opportunity to do some work for him and get to know him.

I never imagined that he would someday know my name when I saw him speaking at the Campaign Managers Conference in the fall. The entire experience has been a great fusion of public and private sector work. While the company is working for many campaigns, such as the Ro Khanna for Congress campaign and the Booker campaign, we're also working for non-political entities such as my beloved Chicago Cubs.

Interning here at 270 has really been an enlightening experience as far as seeing how people who are really committed to public service and causes they believe in can still operate within the private sector.
