In light of scheduling issues and overall length of the 2008 presidential election cycle's caucuses and primaries, the Institute of Politics hosted a symposium to examine the primary process with secretaries of state, political operatives, DNC and RNC Rules Committees members, and Members of Congress. Our intent was not to solve particular issues, but rather to convene key players to get a better understanding of where everyone stands. Professor Elaine Kamarck will publish a white paper on the discussions.
The agenda for the day was planned in consultation with the National Association of Secretaries of State and included moderated discussions that examine: issues with the 2008 primary calendar; plans for change that are currently on the table; challenges to implementing any plan; and alternative approaches.
