The Policy Program is a student-run think-tank allowing students to create advocacy groups on a specific policy area. Groups conduct research and produce professional quality products (policy papers, model legislation, and op-eds) on their issue. Past groups have presented their ideas to key decision makers, including Cabinet Secretaries and US Senators, and have seen their ideas implemented on a range of issues. The program allows you to take your ideas and knowledge beyond the walls of the IOP by making substantive contributions to the most pressing policy issues of the day.
Current groups include:
Civic Education – Making recommendations to Congress on how best to reinvigorate American civic education, with an emphasis on working through the No Child Left Behind reauthorization to create innovative new programs, expand grants, and create National Civic Education Foundation.
Energy – Designing comprehensive national energy policy that addresses environmental impacts, is sustainable, is affordable and takes into account national security concerns.
Homelessness – Working to determine how to provide more resources to the underserved population of homeless single men, who are the largest group of homeless in Massachusetts, but who often receive the least funding.
Lighting China – Exploring solutions through NGOs to adequately supply energy to meet the needs of China's growing economy.
Healthcare Policy – Analyzing the current challenges facing the American health care system and designing a proposal that addresses these issues, incorporating the best ideas from various candidates, think tanks, and academics.
Immigration – Analyzing the current challenges facing American immigration policy, with an emphasis on issues affecting children and workers.
