The Institute of Politics is housed at one of Harvard’s graduate schools: the John F. Kennedy School of Government. While the Institute’s main focus is on undergraduates, its location at the Kennedy School allows a natural interaction with the graduate students who have chosen public service as a career. Kennedy School students often participate in study groups and IOP events.
Harvard University includes Harvard College and ten graduate and professional schools. Harvard College has 6,500 undergraduate students who, as freshmen, live in dormitories in what is known as Harvard Yard. As they enter their sophomore year, undergraduates move into one of the 12 residential houses around the campus.
The House system is a special aspect of Harvard life. It combines housing, academic and social activities and community service opportunities for students, faculty and affiliates. The Institute of Politics enables Fellows to become affiliated with the Houses at Harvard, and Fellows often dine with their students at the Houses.
A Fellow may bring his or her family to live in residence for the semester. The Institute of Politics provides housing for fellows. Spouses, partners, visitors and study group guests are invited to participate with the Fellows in IOP activities.
Fellows at the Institute of Politics are able to use all of the facilities of Harvard University: athletic facilities, libraries, museums, and other resources. Fellows are eligible to receive membership in the Faculty Club and may audit courses at Harvard College and other schools at the University. The Institute arranges for Fellows to meet the scholars, practitioners and participants of other centers at the University.
