Why you teach CIVICS: More than ever before in our history, our nation's youth is experiencing a disenchantment and disempowerment with respect to their home communities and society. Politics is felt to transpire at a distance from the problems that face everyday people, particularly in the impoverished inner city, and the public sphere has ceased to operate as a forum in which citizens convene to confront the problems that confront them collectively. CIVICS works to change this; by equipping our students will not only a knowledge of government, but also the confidence and skills to take themselves and one another seriously in engaging in political argument and discussion, we are offering our students the power to become effective agents of change in their home communities.

Favorite CIVICS Lesson: 1.First Amendment: Freedom of Speech- This was my favorite lesson because I think it is becoming increasingly important to remember that the Bill of Rights was written as a safeguard against the curbing of our civil liberties in times of national emergencies. Though our nation's challenges are new, the concept of preserving freedom of speech even when that speech is unpopular is timeless and worth protecting.
Why you teach CIVICS: I teach CIVICS because I believe in the importance of government participation and civic duty. While proficiency in math, science, and the humanities is certainly important, a people's understanding of their government is paramount in a democratic nation. CIVICS offers a much more comprehensive and engaging lesson in government than a textbook, as it allows students to see how concepts and theories are applied to their everyday lives.
I enjoy helping students understand how they as individuals can help shape their government and make their voices count.
