The Institute of Politics is offering a limited number of stipends to enable undergraduates returning to Harvard in the fall to accept summer jobs in local, state or federal government, public interest groups, non-governmental organizations and political organizations. This includes working on a campaign. For Summer 2008, the IOP is opening up a limited amount of funding available for undergrads to accept unpaid international political or public service internships, including with the U.S. State Department.
Students are responsible for obtaining employment, and the job should be full-time and last a minimum of six weeks. Students who leave their internships earlier than expected are required to notify the Institute of Politics. Summer stipends are intended to benefit students with non-paying or low-paying positions. Preference will be given to undergrads who have never received an IOP Stipend, or who have only received one.
If your internship is eligible, awards of up to $2,500 will be made per the financial need of each student. The Harvard Financial Aid office will provide the selection committee with a general evaluation of each applicant's financial need, including summer work study status. This information is confidential. Stipend recipients must apply for summer work-study funds if there is any possibility of eligibility.
A selection committee comprised of Institute of Politics staff and members of the Institute's Internships Committee will review all submissions. Institute staff will ensure the anonymity of all applicants during the evaluation process. At the conclusion of your internship, the IOP will require a supervisor's report as well as a brief summary of your internship by September 2008.
